Oct 12, 2011 - 9:07 AM Fashion show benefits those with disabilities FASHION FASCINATIONS. Gwyneth Harkin, first vice-president of the IODE Walter Baker Chapter, is busy planning the organization’s fashion show at the Hellenic Banquet Centre to benefit the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. Photo by Kristy Wallace An upcoming charity fashion show will give Ottawa residents a taste of some of the styles this year – but will also give back to the community. “This fall fundraiser is our major one,” said Gwyneth Harkin, a Barrhaven resident who’s first vice-president of the IODE Walter Baker Chapter, the group hosting the event. “We try and keep our costs very low, so the vast majority of what people bring to us goes out to those who need it.” The IODE Walter Baker chapter is a charity organization that’s been serving the Ottawa area since 1988. But the IODE itself has existed since 1900, and is made up of women who want to enhance the quality of life for individuals. The Walter Baker Chapter, partnering with Kanata designer Jana Hanzel, will be holding this year’s fashion show to benefit the Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Development Disabilities, and for the chapter’s other charitable projects. The association helps those with developmental disabilities in all aspects of their life – whether it’s housing needs, support groups or home assistance. “We’ve been doing fashion shows for many years,” said Harkin. |
“This will be an evening fashion show, and we’re
excited (Hanzel) will be working with us.”
Harkin said the evening will feature a fashion show that displays both beach and fall/winter styles, as well as a silent auction. "It will be women’s designs, but we’re encouraging women to bring their partners and spouses. We have silent auction items that appeal to both men and women,” she said. Harkin added that the fashion designer will have a table set up and will be selling hats and accessories, with a certain percentage going towards the charity. Harkin said she prefers not to divulge the group’s fundraising goal, and that the group is grateful to receive whatever they can. In the group’s lifetime, she said they have raised about $20,000 to $30,000 for various charities across Ottawa. She’s confident this year’s fashion show will gain more attention since it will be an evening event. In the past, it used to be an afternoon event. “Generally we have shows in the afternoon which curtails who can come,” said Harkin. “It’s a twofold thing – we want to raise money but also awareness of IODE and attract new membership to the organization.” The event will take place on Oct. 21 and ticket prices are $50, with advance purchase only. Harkin said the cash bar and silent auction will start at 6 p.m. with dinner around 7 p.m., followed by the fashion show around 8 p.m. The deadline for tickets is Oct. 17, and those who are interested can call Harkin at XXX-XXX-XXXX. IODE is listed on the government website under its former name Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/lstngs/menu-eng.html |
